Internet2 releases Shibboleth 2.0

Posted on Thursday, 20 March 2008

The Shibboleth release announced by Internet2 today consists of revised service provider and completely re-written identity provider software. As such, UK federation procedures and documentation do not currently address use of Shibboleth 2.0 within the UK federation. UK federation members wishing to register Shibboleth 2.0 entities are welcome to do so, with the understanding that the registration process may take a little longer than usual while procedures and documentation are developed.

The Shibboleth 2.0 software is intended to be backwards-compatible with the previous release (1.3) but not with version 1.2 or older. Any members still running 1.2-generation software are strongly recommended to migrate to more modern software before Shibboleth 1.2 reaches its official end-of-life in May 2008.

Initial testing of the Shibboleth 2.0 release as part of the software's beta cycle indicates that it is generally compatible with software currently used within the UK federation. However, as with any new software, individual members should perform their own compatibility testing before planning to use the new release in production.
