End of life for Shibboleth IdP v3 and IdP v4 upgrade guide

Posted on Friday, 2 October 2020

In March 2020, the Shibboleth IdP v4 was released, at the same time the Shibboleth IdP v3 end of life was announced, which will be the 31st December 2020.

The Trust and Identity team at Jisc supporting the UK federation have now made available an IdP v4 upgrade guide

This is a collection of guidance for operators of Shibboleth Identity Providers (IdPs) which operate within the UK federation. It is aimed at operators of an existing IdP running the Shibboleth IdP v3 software, that will need to be upgrade to the Shibboleth IdP v4. This upgrade should be completed before 31st December 2020, when the Shibboleth IdP v3 software will be end of support with the Shibboleth project and v4 will be the only supported version of the Identity Provider software.

Whilst the UK federation support desk will provide support for operators upgrading their IdP beyond 31st December 2020, we would advise using the IdP v4 upgrade guide, in addition to documentation on the official Shibboleth IdP v4 Wiki, and upgrading as soon as possible, to ensure that you can receive necessary security updates to the software.

Please note we will cease our support for maintaining legacy Shibboleth IdP v3 via our service desk during early 2021, so that we can focus effort on providing support for operators running supported versions of software.

For organisations requiring in-depth and hands-on support we offer a Trust and Identity consultancy service
