School membership of UK federation gaining pace as numbers hit 300

15 April 2008 - YHGfL Foundation has become the 300th member to join the UK Access Management Federation for Education and Research, adding to the growing number of Regional Broadband Consortia (RBCs) and Local Authorities helping schools to take advantage of simplified and secure access to on-line content and resources.

UCISA provides guidance on Access Management

UCISA (the Universities and Colleges Information Systems Association) has published guidance for institutions to assist them to come to their own conclusions and plan their short and long term strategies for managing access to resources. The guidance is intended to lay out the options available and has been compiled from UCISA’s initial draft and input from both Eduserv and JISC.

Internet2 releases Shibboleth 2.0

The Shibboleth release announced by Internet2 today consists of revised service provider and completely re-written identity provider software. As such, UK federation procedures and documentation do not currently address use of Shibboleth 2.0 within the UK federation. UK federation members wishing to register Shibboleth 2.0 entities are welcome to do so, with the understanding that the registration process may take a little longer than usual while procedures and documentation are developed.

Federated access management: JISC announces changes to transition arrangements

As part of its transition programme for federated access management for UK education and research, JISC has been actively seeking an extension to the Federation Gateway Services contract with Eduserv which would allow Athens to work in the open standards environment of the UK Access Management Federation. Regretfully, we must announce that we have not managed to reach an affordable agreement for the provision of the service, and it will no longer form part of the JISC Services portfolio from 1st August 2008.

EDINA Digimap available via the UK federation

EDINA Digimap, which celebrates its 8th birthday this week, is a collection of services delivering maps and map data of Great Britain to UK Higher and Further Education. The 100,000th Digimap OS service user was registered in December 2007.
