JANET(UK)'s Role in the UK Federation

JANET(UK) operate the federation for the UK education and research sector, on behalf of JISC and Becta.

JANET(UK) will publish and maintain the federation metadata which is central to the Shibboleth model. Metadata contains configuration information that enables federation members to communicate amongst themselves in order to gain access to a protected resource. JANET(UK) will also host and maintain the WAYF (Where Are You From?) component of the federation. This allows a user's institution to be identified when they attempt to access an online resource. User support and federation policy implementation are handled by JANET(UK).

JANET(UK) also carried out a Consultation Exercise which finished on 26th October 2006.
