TASKS UNDERTAKEN BY JANET(UK)

  1. Overview
    1. Each Party performs tasks which constitute parts of The UK Access Management Federation for Education and Research (the UK federation).
    2. The Parties participate in regular teleconferences to discuss progress, issues arising and other matters as may be relevant. JANET(UK) ensures that EDINA is kept informed of all significant managerial and policy developments.
    3. This Schedule lists the tasks undertaken by JANET(UK) in delivering the UK federation service to the education and research community within an agreed service definition.
  2. Infrastructure
    1. JANET(UK) ensures the provision, hosting and maintenance of the hardware on which the Discovery Service application runs and the hardware from which federation members download federation metadata.
  3. Membership enrolment and entity registration
    1. JANET(UK) checks and registers the eligibility of new Member Organisations once the signed rules of membership have been received.
    2. JANET(UK) collects and maintains executive and management contact information for each Member Organisation and any additional contact information specified for each registered entity.
    3. JANET(UK) verifies that the Member Organisation owns or has permission to use any DNS domain name used in an entity registration.
    4. JANET(UK) passes to EDINA the necessary data gathered from Member Organisations wishing to register for or change entity information in the UK federation.
    5. JANET(UK) completes a Member Organisations’ registration process or change request, once the UK federation metadata has been updated by EDINA.
  4. Technical support
    1. JANET(UK) provides first line support and operates the UK federation helpdesk as a central contact point for enquiries. The helpdesk operates a ticketing and escalation system to track all enquiries.
    2. JANET(UK) escalates technical support enquiries to EDINA where expert advice is required or where changes to the metadata are required.
  5. Federation website
    1. JANET(UK) has lead editorial responsibility for the UK federation website.
  6. Training, events and promotion
    1. JANET(UK) provides training courses in support of the UK federation service.
    2. JANET(UK) provides e-learning objects in support of the UK federation service.
    3. JANET(UK) runs events in support of the UK federation service and UK federation technologies.
    4. JANET(UK) co-ordinates promotion and communication activities associated with the UK federation.
    5. JANET(UK) creates and maintains mailing lists associated with the UK federation service, other than the technical contacts list which is maintained by EDINA.
  7. Co-ordination and liaison
    1. JANET(UK) co-ordinates and chairs monthly technical meetings with EDINA.
    2. JANET(UK) co-ordinates and chairs monthly meetings with the UK federation funders.
    3. JANET(UK) co-ordinates and chairs monthly meetings with Eduserv and EDINA to ensure interworking between Athens and the UK federation.
    4. JANET(UK) liaises with representatives from the education and research sectors in the UK to ensure that the UK federation is meeting their needs.
    5. JANET(UK) engages with other public sector bodies interested in participating in the UK federation.
  8. Development
    1. JANET(UK) and EDINA work together to agree on matters concerning ongoing operational development of the UK federation.
    2. JANET(UK) is responsible for producing the UK federation Roadmap document in consultation with other interested parties.
  9. Policy
    1. JANET(UK) is responsible for the legal framework for membership of the federation.
  10. Security
    1. JANET(UK) and EDINA share information on security issues likely to affect UK federation Members and confer on steps for their resolution.
  11. Reporting
    1. JANET(UK) provides monthly reports to the UK federation funders on membership, outages and availability, WAYF redirects, metadata downloads and enquiries handled, using figures provided by EDINA.
